All About Cinsault Chileno!

Like many of the varieties shining in Chile, the almighty Cinsault is no exception. Originally from southern France, Cinsault is a true working grape. Historically, it was used for bulk wine thanks to its naturally high acidity, high yield and low ABV. Today, however, Cinsault plays a central role in shaping the identity of Chile’s Itata Valley.

The first plantings of Cinsault in Chile date back to the 1930s, where it found a perfect home in the southern reaches of the Itata Valley. Today, Itata is considered the heartland of Chile’s patrimonial varieties, including País, Moscatel, Chasselas, and Carignan.

If you’ve never tried Cinsault, imagine a more rustic, slightly tannic Pinot Noir—offering greater structure yet beautifully polished tannins. Aromatically, it delivers red plum, violets, smoky minerality, and a refreshing natural acidity that keeps the wines vibrant and expressive.

So why does Cinsault shine in Itata? Simply put, it has fully adapted to the terroir. The valley’s soils—layers of clay, decomposed granite and quartz, limestone, and volcanic material—provide complexity and tension. Combined with sunny days, frequent overcast skies, and the sharp cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean, the result is wines with naturally low alcohol and striking freshness.
