Sparkling: Drink Portugal Now

In today's wine world, finding exceptional value is more crucial than ever. Gone are the days of effortlessly discovering affordable gems. With rising costs, particularly in the realm of sparkling wine where Champagne prices have soared, the hunt for quality at a reasonable price can feel like a real challenge.

This year, our attention has turned to Portugal, a country already renowned for its value and quality. However, their sparkling wine scene is truly captivating. The Grand Cata team has been diligently tasting, and we're thrilled to share three outstanding options perfect for any occasion:

  • Osvaldo Amado, Todos, Baga: Prepare to be impressed! This 100% Baga sparkler, crafted from a red grape reminiscent of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, delivers an elegance and depth typically found in bottles far exceeding its $35 price point. Crisp and complex, this is a summer must-try. You can find it by the glass at our wine bat at Cosecha and to go in Shaw.

  • Poco do Lobo: Another fantastic discovery from the same region, this wine offers a similar style, crafted entirely from Nebbiolo. Aged on its lees for 28 months, it boasts impressive complexity and a persistent, refreshing acidity. Imagine it alongside creamy goat cheese, asparagus, and a perfectly poached egg.

  • Electium Pétillant Naturel: For the pét-nat enthusiasts, this natural sparkling wine from the Vinho Verde region is a revelation. Refreshing and bursting with vibrant fruit, this blend of Loureiro (60%), Arinto (20%), and Avesso (20%) undergoes spontaneous fermentation and rests on its lees for 12 months. Made with minimal intervention, this is best enjoyed well-chilled, ideally outdoors, with any lemon-kissed fish dish. Cheers!
